The light houses of Hawaii have a unique place in the history of Hawaii. Many of them were built in a time when getting to Hawaii by boat was the only way to get to Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands were very dependent on the light houses to ensure safe passage through the often trechrous Hawaiian waters.
One of the most interesting of the lighthouses of Hawaii is the Kilauea Lighthouse on Kauai. The Kilauea lighthouse is the northernmost point of the primary Hawaiian Islands. It was build in 1913 and was the state of the art in its day. The Kilauea Lighthouse is located on a narrow finger of land that protrudes into the sea and was turned off in the 1970's when newer technology came into effect. One of the reasons the Kilauea Light House is still a big attraction to visitors is because it is directly next to the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to a diverse population of seabirds. These seabirds include the red footed boobies, the Laysan Albatross, frigate birds and others. It is quite a spectacle to see them building their nests on the cliffs in this spectacular setting.
